The biggest tournament of the year is due later this month when the country hosts the week-long All-Africa Senior Badminton Championships from October 21 to 28.
Uganda will be hosting the competition for the first time in history. Sixteen countries have confirmed participation including Algeria, Egypt, Nigeria, Cameroon, Zambia, Ghana, DR Congo and South Africa.
The Championship also doubles as a qualification tournament for the 2022 Commonwealth Games to be held in Birmingham, England. Last week, Mandela Group of companies, through their subsidiary company, City Tyres, unveiled their support for the Championship by handing out 30 glittering trophies that will be given to the best performers.
City Tyres spokesperson Herbert Bashaasha said the company was coming in to help a sport with a lot of potential but one that has been set back by the pandemic.
“Mandela Group loves to help sport as you have seen with chess, football, basketball, cricket and motorsport. And we know that badminton like every other body has been affected by Covid-19. We will continue supporting youth development through sports despite the challenges posed by the pandemic and we are happy to partner with the Uganda Badminton Association for this event,” Bashaasha explained.
Apart from the trophies, City Tyres have also provided uniforms for the event. The tournament will have both team and individual events. The categories will include men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles.
