Kasese Woman MP, Winfred Kiiza, has been appointed leader of opposition in Parliament, replacing Wafula Oguttu who lost his Bukooli Central seat in the February 18 elections.
Kiiza’s appointment by Maj Gen Mugisha Muntu during a party meeting at Najjanankumbi did not come as a surprise because Kasese voted overwhelmingly for FDC at national and local levels. She is said to have played an instrumental role in this performance, hence the reward.
Relatedly, Ssemujju Ibrahim Nganda, the Kira municipality MP, is the new opposition chief whip, replacing Cecilia Ogwal, who was appointed a parliamentary commissioner.
Ssemujju’s appointment is another feather in the cap for someone who joined elective politics just six years ago. Before that, Ssemujju had served in the shadow cabinet and more recently as a chairperson of the committee on Commissions, Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises (Cosase).
However, sources told us that the appointment of Kiiza as LoP did not go down well with party officials from northern Uganda who favoured Ogwal.
Innocent Ayo, the FDC secretary for International and Regional Affairs, reportedly stormed out of the meeting. Ayo told journalists that they expected Muntu to appoint Ogwal as LoP given her experience.
He said it is unfair to appoint Kiiza LoP since she already holds the position of FDC Women League chairperson.
Sources said that some party members skipped the meeting because they believed finding a solution to Dr Kizza Besigye’s predicament was more important at this material time.
Besigye remains incarcerated in Luzira prison over charges of treason.
