Colombe Akiwacu is Miss Rwanda 2014. She was crowned during a colourful event held at Petit Stade in Remera, Kigali.
She was among 15 finalists for the beauty pageant after a countrywide selection exercise. The 19-year-old representing the Eastern Province, promised to use her new social status to campaign against drug abuse.
Akiwacu walked away with a grand prize that included a brand new car, a return air ticket to France or Spain and a cash prize of Rwf 2m, among other prizes that included shopping vouchers.
She takes over from Aurore Mutesi Kayibanda, a second-year Civil Engineering student at Kigali Institute of Science and technology, who reigned for two years. It is not clear whether Akiwacu will also reign for two years.
She will be representing Rwanda at different world pageants including Miss World. Marlene Mutoniwase, 22, the second runner-up, won Rwf 1m while Carmen Akineza, 22, who was trying her luck on the crown for the second time, emerged first runner-up.
The pageant is organized by the ministry of Sports and Culture, under the theme “My Beauty, My Skills, My Tools for Self-reliance.”
The show was hosted by McLion Manzi and Sheila Gashumba. The first edition of Miss Rwanda was in 2009 and was hosted by Mitch Egwang.
