Lutalo, Benon Kibuuka shine at Uganda Entertainment awards

David Lutalo poses with his 2 awards

Andrew Benon Kibuuka has been in the performing arts for more than three decades, but he remains a force to reckon with.

The theatre expert won gongs for outstanding entertainment personality and best theatre personality, at the inaugural Uganda Entertainment awards at Speke Resort Munyonyo on Friday.

Singer David Lutalo was also among the night’s biggest winners after he bagged the award for best male artiste. His Mubbi Bubbi duet with Maro also took the award for best collaboration.

The event, hosted by MTV Base’s VJ Ehiz Okoeguale, recognized several personalities in the entertainment industry in 41 categories - including DJs, TV series, actors and television and radio presenters.

Tanzanian singer Diamond Platinumz, of the Number One fame, proved that he has completely married into Uganda, when he won the award for Best African act. Diamond’s victory came after he asked his fans through his social media accounts to vote for him.

However, heavyweights Ziza Bafana, Sheebah Karungi, Pallaso and Cindy lost the award for best dancehall artiste to newcomer A-Pass. Quite predictably, Anne Kansiime took the award for best female comedian while King Saha took the award for RnB artiste.

Tooro queen mother Best Kemigisa, who was the guest of honor, praised the musicians for their role in ensuring that functions are always fun.

“Music is food for the ears. It has to be played at any function. Therefore, I do appreciate the work you do,” Kemigisa said.

The fun-filled night was graced by performances from Maurice Kirya, Nigeria’s Maestro and Tonix.  Maddox Ssematimba also put up an energetic performance of Ndabirawa, which left most revelers on their feet. He, however, left immediately after his performance; so, he was not around when he was called up for the lifetime achievement award.

The humanitarian award went to businessman Frank Gashumba, while Maurice Kirya was named Noble artiste of the year.
