But it is until she performs on stage that she brings out the wild side of her but in this interview with The Observer, she remained guarded as if on a job interview. Unlike many artistes who take baby steps to hone their skills, Becky had never stepped in front of a microphone to sing until she was in studio.
She was just one of those young women who enjoy hanging out at music concerts and watching their favourite stars. That was then until January 2018 when she decided to give music a try.
“I was home bored one day while watching music on the television and I felt I could also do it,” she says. “I called a friend and asked her if she knew anyone who could give me an audition. That’s when I got connected to musician Victor Kamenyo.”
Kamenyo, himself a budding musician, was so impressed with Becky’s vocal range that he connected her to music producers and within weeks, she was in our faces with the hit, Bankuza.
It was last April that she released the song and in just a few days, it had gone viral. “My phone kept buzzing the whole day with people calling to book me for shows,” she says. “It was beyond my wildest dreams.”
Indeed, Chosen Becky had gate-crashed celebrity life; far from the lifestyle while growing up in Masaka district a few years back.
“I grew up in a humble family and throughout my life, I never dreamt of taking on music as a profession,” she says. “I used to greatly admire David Lutalo and Irene Namubiru. Deep down I also knew I had the talent but my focus was studying.”
After completing her A-level at St Anthony SS Kayunga in 2016, Chosen Becky wanted to pursue business administration at university and just about when she was still mulling about where to study from, the music urge stepped in.
“I still plan to finish my academics but for now music has taken over my life,” she says.
Well, Chosen Becky has several other songs such as Aliba Ani, Byabangi and Omukkuto, among others. She has even made collabos with Geosteady in the song Ebisembayo, but it is actually Bankuza that has taken over her life and she admits the song is more popular than her.
“I still find people who call me Bankuza, but I don’t mind because that is a compliment,” she says. “I’m confident I will not be a one-hit wonder and I want to make as many hits as possible.”
Chosen Becky recently signed with David Lutalo and his management team and she hopes the move will further elevate her career.
Incidentally, Lutalo’s debut hit in 2008 called Kapapala clouded his career for years until he broke free with a series of hits. So, Chosen Becky perhaps could not have chosen a better mentor.
“I have learnt a lot in the short time I’ve worked with him,” she says. “He is so natural and works to uplift other musicians. My hope is to avoid being in scandals associated with musicians.”
Last Friday, she had an opportunity to showcase her real music prowess when she lined up alongside the legendary Afrigo band at Club Guvnor.
“This is the biggest opportunity I have got so far and performing with Afrigo is a real challenge,” she said.
