So, the question was; who was to change religion if they were to marry and live happily thereafter?

Indeed, it was not easy for both but with love, nothing is impossible. On August 4, Frank and Joe tied the knot at Namirembe cathedral, in a colourful ceremony.

“It wasn’t easy [to agree to formally wed in a church] but Frank’s love melted me,” said Joe after the wedding. “I just couldn’t stand the reality of losing him because of our different religions.”

On his part, Frank was surprised at how easy it was.

“I expected resistance [from her family] but I was prepared to take it step by step. Even if it meant waiting for another 10 years…but her family gave us the go-ahead and I couldn’t be more proud,” he said.

Joe is a renowned event organiser and, indeed, the couple pulled all stops to make the event grand. They had a 14-member wedding entourage that had the four bridesmaids matching their sky-blue dresses with the groomsmen’s navy blue tuxedos.

Then again, the majestic reception setting at Buloba Forest park gardens offered all guests a view of the couple on their raised platform.

To crown it all was an all-star performance from Winnie Nwagi, Chris Evans and Rema Namakula.

So frenzied was the atmosphere that guests freely mixed up during the performances.

This was unlike the conventional weddings full of speeches and by the time the couple cut the cake at around 9pm, the party mood had reached fever-pitch.

It was still ongoing by the time The Observer left at 11pm.
