Prof Celestino Obua has been appointed vice-chancellor of Mbarara University of Science and Technology.
Obua, who has been the deputy principal of the college of Health Sciences at Makerere University, is due to take office on October 24, succeeding founding Vice-Chancellor Prof Frederick Kayanja. According to the university’s public relations officer, Denis Lukaaya, Prof Obua, pharmacologist by training, has already met the university visitor, President Museveni. The two met at State House Entebbe, on July 31.
Prof Kayanja helped start the university in 1989, as its first vice-chancellor. Initially, the university operated out of Mbarara hospital, to address the shortage of scientists and instill a sense of community service in its students. Since then, Mbarara University of Science and Technology has expanded to embrace several new structures.
It also operates the only exclusive eye hospital in western Uganda. A new campus is currently under construction at the expansive Kihumuro campus on the outskirts of Mbarara town.
