Total E&P Uganda gets new boss

Adewale Fayemi, Total E&P Uganda's new GM

Total group has appointed Adewale Fayemi, a Nigerian national, as the new general manager of Total E&P Uganda Limited.

Fayemi replaces Francois Rafin from France, who was recalled back to head office in Paris in January this year – less than six months after he took up the job. Total E&P Uganda is one of the oil companies in the country’s oil and gas sector alongside UK’s Tullow and China’s Cnooc.

According to a statement from Total group, Fayemi’s appointment took effect on August 31, 2015.

“He will be responsible for preparing Total E&P Uganda’s operations in the Lake Albert basin during the transition from the exploration and appraisal phase to development phase,” the statement reads.

Fayemi’s main task will be to negotiate with government to secure production licenses for the company. Total has submitted five applications for production licenses in the Buliisa, and Nwoya areas. Government is yet to give it a green light.

Government says oil companies will get production licenses before the end of the year. Only Cnooc has a production license for the Kingfisher field. It is believed that the sluggish pace in the oil sector coupled with a fall in global oil prices was responsible for Rafin’s exit.

Fayemi becomes the third general manager for the company in Uganda since it joined the country’s petroleum exploration in 2012. Fayemi has worked with Total for the last 22 years.

Prior to his appointment in Uganda, Fayemi was the managing director of Total E&P Ivory Coast, from June 2014 to August 2015. He also worked with Total E&P Nigeria as the executive general manager, deep water field operations, from 2012 to 2014 and general manager, Akpo field operations, from 2011 to 2012.

He has also served as field operations manager in both Total E&P Netherlands (2009 to 2011) and Elf Petroleum Nigeria (2007 to 2009). Fayemi is a graduate of the University of Lagos and holds a Master's degree in Chemical Engineering.
