Three pupils of Greenhill Academy in Kampala were caught watching a pornographic movie during the just concluded school leavers’ camp. The students; two boys and a girl, were nabbed during the two-week camp held annually at the school to help P7 pupils cope with the transition from Primary School to Secondary School, at the end of their Primary Leaving Examinations.

After these exams every year, Greenhill Academy, an upmarket school located in Kibuli, a Kampala suburb, invites several teachers and counselors to the school to give lectures to pupils on various topics, including adolescence and how to cope with boarding secondary school.  During this programme last month, one of the male pupils, whose names we can’t disclose because he is a minor, came to the school with a portable DVD player and some DVDs.

The pupil then proceeded to invite two friends, one female and another male, to watch a pornographic video on the said player during a break. A member of staff who picked the story from the school’s staff meeting says the pupils gathered at the back of the classroom and stretched their break time right into another lecture in order to watch a movie.

This was until a teacher who came in after the break became suspicious of the group at the back of the classroom that was not paying attention. The teacher suddenly moved in on the pupils to find out what was keeping them busy. In a frantic effort to avoid getting caught, one of the pupils unsuccessfully attempted to switch off the DVD player, but the teacher had already struck, catching all three. The trio was matched out of the class and off to the staffroom, where they were asked to write statements.

A teacher who spoke to us on condition of anonymity says the pupils admitted guilt in their statements and asked for forgiveness.

“They could not hide anything after they had been caught,” the teacher said. The matter was then handed to the school rector who reportedly reviewed the movie and then invited the three pupils’ parents to witness what their children were indulging in.

The parents were reportedly shocked at what their children were watching at school. A counselor was invited to speak to both the parents and pupils. The latter were then sent home with instructions to wait for their fate. For now, the school appears haunted by the incident, with teachers reluctant to speak about it openly or be quoted.

Indeed even the outgoing P7 class, to which the three errant pupils belong, was not briefed on the specifics of the matter, to say nothing of the rest of the school.  The matter has also divided the teachers with some advocating harsh punishment and others asking for leniency. The harshest punishment advocated by some teachers is refusing the pupils from returning to the school even if they pass their exams well enough to join Greenhill’s secondary section.

Others even want the school to write to whichever schools these pupils go to for secondary education, alerting them about this incident.

“I would rather the school writes to whichever school takes them on so that they are known and helped accordingly, otherwise they should not be allowed to come back,” a teacher said.

But another teacher was more conciliatory. “I can excuse the others who were watching, but not the one who brought the DVD player to the school as it shows that they are used to this vice,” she said.

However, the school administration has ruled that for now the pupils only need counseling, postponing any possible punishment until early next year. Greenhill Academy Rector, Mrs Maraka, told The Observer that it is too early to determine the pupils’ fate as it is not clear whether they will reform.

The three pupils will be praying that they pass their exams well enough to qualify for a good secondary school next year, and that this incident will not blot the rest of their educational life.

Parents are to blame
written by Gulere Cornelius , November 29, 2009

I wish to defend the children who were found watching ponography during a post primary coaching session. Life does not happen like that my dear colleagues.

I am a teacher and a 'young parent' and what i have learnt these 20 years of my being is that children are wiser than either of their parents and certainly smarter than their teachers.

They know what they want and we are busy blocking them from achieving their full potential. Worse still, we do certain things and we think that they are neither interested nor seeing. As soon as an opprttunity strikes, they will use it.

Thisis what these children did. Many parents and teachers these days hide behind religion to deny their parental responsibility. The outcome is homos, les, and this; just a tip of the iceberg.

Parents and teachers, YOU MUST SPEAK to the children about their sexuality before they begin to discover from behind the classroms, behind the taxis and on streets.

before you realise, your best pupil, daughter or son will either be pregnant or pining with AIDS. This case need no procrastination but to help the parents and all the children during the camp to begin seriously talking about their sexuality.

You will agree with me that sexuality and the health of it contributes to the full development of a person. But that will be for next time.

Its normal

99.999% of all Ugandans have watched pornography by the time they are 16. These teachers have probably done worse things than porn,

so it amazes Me that one of them is proposing that 'the school writes to whichever school takes them on so that they are known and helped accordingly' why should we stigmatise them, watching porn is a stage in growing up. We all did it!!!!

Think about it
written by MM , November 30, 2009

This matter looks serious on the surface, but in reality it should be dealt with caution. This country we are living in is in a vulnerable situation, vulnerable because of homosexuals.

If they(homosexuals) read this story, believe me they will hunt down these kids and tell them all sorts of stoies confirming to them how bad heterosexual behaviour are.

For those who want to be so harsh to these kids, revisit the kind of punishments to give them.My advice is,not to embarrass these kids infront of their friends, and the issue of councelling is the best.

Ponography
written by Nyambura , November 30, 2009

This is a terrible experience, but its true and we parents, the hearts are bleeding with pain. This is common!!! Dont think that because you have never seen your child with anything like that, he/she is safe. WAPI!!!!

These childrem are very very very wise to the extent that they can hide those DVDs in their safe places even outside the house, ad they are watched only during the day when parents are at work.

We have to wake up and fight it together - the young generation is not safe. Some read these porns in daily newspapers on the streets and their fellow pupils bring them to school.

Counsel
written by jumba H , November 30, 2009

This kids are just getting into adolescence. What they did should be discouraged. They should be shown that it is not good for them. Counselling should suffice in this case.

Remember any misguided child could do it

These pupils should be counseled and and be given punishment agreed on by the parents. Destroying their future (education) will not help at all. They need help, we all make mistakes at one time or the other

A word for the Greenhill teachers.
written by R.N. M , November 30, 2009

So you have decided that the culprits of this act should be expelled. And in so doing you think you are actually solving the problem. Don't you think you are lying to your selves.

I imagine these three kids are the safest to have around because you know their issues and you can help them out.

The ones you don't suspect may actually be worse. You remember the boys you expelled last year following a drug scandal?

I rest my case and I sincerely wish you the best in your endeavors. May God bless the Queen!

Ooh....
written by Wesley , November 30, 2009

Dear observer, Do you really need to publish this story?

I think people who are not concerned should not have to know that it did happen.

Now what was in a staff meeting is now in the masses. And it really doesnt help the school and staff nor the victim students.

The fact is what they did was wrong.. Maybe the punishment was hush but that doesnt take out the fact that what they did was wrong!

Greenhill is not doing enough. Being a school for the upper class, they shy away from kids letting them do whatever they wish.

Such parents have no time to guide kids nor check what they share from pals. Teachers/admin should also wake up &own up.Greenhill should do more on discipline and less on business.

We entrust you with our kids. Remember the Kasole model (KPS). Bring back the old teachers otherwise the youthful staff thinks kids are their siblings.

Thety are tin tins
written by Jimmy , November 30, 2009

These are young boys and girls who are just developing in to adulthood. Watching such movies is just part of the process so we should not behave and act as if they have killed someone.

Simply talk to them and explain to the them the temptations that may arise out of watching such movies and their consequences

Stupid Story, Poor Journalism, That's Uganda For You!!
written by Twakoowa , November 30, 2009

This country has gone to the dogs in every way. One child had access to the movies,(fault of parents) brought them to school to share with friends.

Out of curiosity and enthousiam they sit together and watch. At a certain point in early adult life many who can do this. But his time there were some crazy journalist who saw it fit to publish this on the World Wide Web!!

What do yoiu do about the Bukedde and all the prono there that is availabel to even toddlers to watch and read (Some geniuses can!!) This is the problme you get from mixing all those very very different cultures. We need to keep them separated. And by the way, your heading implies the children were involved in making a porno movie.

Thank you Observer.
written by R.N. M , November 30, 2009

Thank you for exposing this mess. The wider public ought to know what is happening with 'innocent' children. and please parents, don't blame Greenhill for as much as you should know, pornography is in almost all schools nowadays.

Years back I heard stories of kids in P3-P4 in the so called model schools who would buy the 'red pepper' during those days when it was uncensored and they would read it from the toilets(boys and girls together).

Parents are expecting too much from the schools yet we know charity begins at home.

Wish you the best.

Prayer and counselling sessions???
written by jaki , November 30, 2009

We live in a so called fast, modern world TODAY.
All the parents need is to get back to the bible days,Proverbs 22:6, says, "

Teach a child how he should live, and he will remember it all his/her life". Fellow parents, the teachers will not train your child on family matters, YOU HAVE TO DO YOUR JOB.

Don't put the blame on them, they are not responsible for counselling your children on such issues, you have been there, so do your job well. Didn't your parents counsel you on these? Let it not be too late, you may live to regret it.

Pray and counsel your growing up children, before they perish, encourage them to go to bible youth meetings to learn more about biblical principles and what God requires of them to be responsible citizens with moral principles.
Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!

Pray, pray pray!!!!!!
written by jaki , November 30, 2009

Remember NOT ALL CHILDREN FOLLOW THIS TREND....THOSE BROUGHT UP IN CHRISTIAN HOMES, ENVIRONMENT, KNOW BIBLICAL PRINCIPLES REGARDING THIS SUBJECT....NO SEX BEFORE MARRIAGE....TURN BACK TO THE BIBLE OTHERWISE ITS DESTRUCTION.

PARENTS DO YOUR JOB,,ITS NOT THE TEACHERS RESPONSIBILITY, THEY HAVE TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR OWN CHILDREN TOO. TEACHING IS A DUTY AND A JOB/BUSINESS..SO WATCH OUT..THE ENEMY CAME TO STEAL, KILL AND DESTROY..TURN BACK TO THE BIBLE IT HAS ALL THE ANSWERS TO ALL LIFE'S TURMOILS...
GOB BLESS YOU AND GUIDE YOU.....
PEACE.....

Ugandans grow up!
written by Bazibu , December 01, 2009

its is important for evryone to appreciate the type of environment kids are exposed to these days.

one needs to accept that with todays TV, internet etc porno is very much available & as youngersters its a perod when one has this urge to experiment or experience or sorts of things.

what these 3 students did should not send shock waves to anyone. there are so many out there who see the same thing the only difference is that they do not do it in school. a suggestion to send letters to other schools and try to spoil the future of the kids is most astonishong and an act of vegeance which is uncalled for.

what is required is to talk to the kids and make them understand how watching such movies may affect their social lives. as one writer has indicated, you find similar stuff in a national newpaper like Bukedde.

take an example of the senga column, can you call these stories acceptable? but many of you adults who are yelling about these kids watching porn you buy bukedde specifically to read this column and evn watch similar movies!.

let us grow up and stop criminalizing anything that is associated with sex simply because we want to impress! how do you describe a person like MM who believes homosexuals are vimpires who will jump on these kids any time?

MM true gays live a consensual sexual life the only difference is that they are of the same sex 7 whatever they do is in their bedroom just like you a heterosexual. your wory should be about rapists. a homosexual who is a rapist is as bad as a heterosexual rapist.

Those teachers ar such jokes
written by ABULU kenneth , December 01, 2009

Instead of expelling those students. Let them be taught the right thing to do. I'm sure those teachers did the same when they were those kid's age so they should be in better position to understand them. 'Let he that has no sin throw a stone'

LETS BACKUP HERE
written by Dr. Eric Miti , December 01, 2009

Dear Staff of GHA, give me a break please. As adults, i dont think the suggestions by the majority of the teachers on the porn case is considerate!!

Remember that these three "little devils" are mere kids excited about adventuring into something that is not right- i mean for the obvious reasons. They therefore need to be counselled and NOT to face such severe punishment that you teachers are suggesting.

And besides this, DO NOT CAST THE FIRST STONE,& HATE THE SIN BUT NOT THE SINNER!Simply show love to these kids by guiding and telling them what is right way and what is wrong about what they have been indulging in.

You have no idea how much trauma you will be subjecting these 3 young souls to if you went ahead with the majority opinion.
There is always a chance for change if you traded the right paths.

Porno films/ videos too much on our streets
written by Jimmy Busuulwa , December 02, 2009

many are blaming those pupils who were found watching porno movie at school. But move on kampala streets in the evening and weekends,on the streets opposite the old taxi park, people are freely selling such porno films in the open.

This is a big shame to our country.Dont we have authorities in kampala to stop this business?? Kampala city council, please stop this business.

It's corrupting the morals of society and our children. Before we blame those children, measures must be taken to regulate porno on the streets, otherwise our children will always be tempted to buy such things which are common on the streets.

Society to blame NOT the children!
written by Bernie , December 02, 2009

I think before we lift a stone to hit these little one let us look at what is with us.

No adult in society leave alone the leaders have risen up to condemn the sprouting video (DVD/VCD) vendors all over Kampala streets, selling these pirated movies at as low a price as 1000/= these vendors have no sense whatsoever of who buys what and they sell movies of all sorts. Now we have all passed though teenage.

At that age you want to learn everything under the sky, so who wouldn't want to know what adults watch?
These children just need guidance and NOT humiliation!

Have you Listened to Obsessions?
written by Gulere Cornelius , December 02, 2009

To celebrate world AIDS Day I commended the song Wekuume to my wife, not because I knew whose song it was but because my son (4years) loves it.

I bet he has never seen the video and like me, until yesterday, he doesn't know who played it. But it is a lovely son with a lovely message and lovely beats.

I decided to go to YOUTUBE to find this song and therewas a warning "adult materials, sign in first to prove you are above 18..." We are all vunerable and exposed to pornographic materials and as a consumer society we have limited choices but to discuss with our children.

Go to the chrches or listen to Pastor Bugembe's "kani" and you will know that no body is immune.Discuss with family questions like What is love? what is sex? When does sex become porno? etc
