I could never have a cup of tea without sugar. Some people think I am living dangerously, and they could be right. Although sugar is not something people fear to ingest, just like any other food, too much of it is certainly bad. And for the extremists any sugar is too bad for your health.
Dr. Andrew Wandawa, of St. Andrew’s Clinic in Kitebi, says sugar is especially bad for people who have to watch their weight. Wandawa says sugar has been known to contribute to obesity, increase risk of diseases like diabetes, gout and encourage tooth decay.
Nutritionist Dorah Nabwire says that because refined sugar has no vitamins, minerals or amino acids the human body cannot easily convert it into glucose. Nabwire explains that although the body cannot do without sugar, adults should restrain from habits like adding too much sugar to their drinks, substituting water in-take with soft drinks (especially sugary ones) and licking sugar.
Nabwire says it would be good for an adult to drink most liquids without sugar, but says if one cannot do without it, then a quarter of a teaspoon should be just fine to add to a cup of black tea. If it is a cup of milk tea, then try taking it without sugar.
And this also applies to foods like doughnuts, cakes, cookies, e.t.c. even if one avoided refined sugar but still ate those; they would suffer the same health effects eventually.
A story on the dangers of sugar in-take on www.naturalnews.com, says sugary foods quickly elevate blood sugar which causes an insulin release that increases stored body fat and the release of pro-inflammatory, cell damaging chemicals that accelerate aging, heart disease, some types of cancer and many more diseases.
Contrary to what many of us know, sugar can turn into an addiction. Some people even realise they cannot do without sugar, but are not willing to admit that they are addicted to it. Yet if you cannot live without something, then you are addicted to it. If you doubt, get a spoon of sugar and toss it in your mouth.
That feeling you get can only be given by a drug. In my case, whenever I did that I wanted to have another spoon, and another and in the process started looking at sugar as my stress fighter. But when I was told that sugar directly causes diabetes, I kicked the habit out of fear. Consequently, I lost weight and started feeling much healthier.
And scientists say sugar is also not good for children. One of the 76 ways sugar can ruin your health listed on angelfire.com is that sugar can cause a rapid rise of adrenaline, hyperactivity, anxiety, difficulty concentrating and crankiness in children.
Naturopath Dr. David Ssali says all refined sugar should be totally cut out of every human being’s diet because it causes cancer and recommends fruits as the source of sugar.
