As Betty Nambooze underwent initial medical tests in a South Africa hospital on Friday, in Kampala it emerged that state operatives tricked her off a November 2 flight to Johannesburg using ENHAS employees, in effect delaying her journey by three days. ENHAS is the company responsible for ground handling at Entebbe Airport.

The Observer has been told that a male employee of ENHAS deceitfully asked the captain of the South African Airways aircraft that was to fly Nambooze to Johannesburg last Monday whether he would be able to fly a sick passenger in need of oxygen. However, while the outspoken DP Spokesperson and Buganda activist was indeed sick, she wasn’t on oxygen as alleged.

At the same time, another EHHAS staff approached Nambooze, who had already obtained a boarding pass, and asked her whether she needed a wheelchair, which she declined.

The captain of flight SA 161 said he wouldn’t fly that passenger because he didn’t have medical personnel on board. After soliciting this objection from the captain, ENHAS staff went to the South African Airways manager at Entebbe, Catherine Mpanga, and informed her that Betty Nambooze was unfit to fly because of her medical condition.

Mpanga communicated the bad news to Nambooze and husband that the captain had refused to fly her on medical grounds. She further told Nambooze to submit a medical clearance allowing her to fly.

On her way back to Kampala to get the demanded medical clearance form, Nambooze got a phone call summoning her to face the Police’s Criminal Investigations Department (CID) at their Kibuli headquarters.
In the company of her lawyer, Kampala Central MP, Erias Lukwago, she met Moses Sakira, the Deputy Director of CID.

However, the same officer who had earlier issued summons for her to explain her alleged role in the September riots in Buganda said she was not needed. Nambooze and Lukwago left the CID headquarters while another lawyer, Fred Mpanga, stayed behind asking the officer to acknowledge in writing that Nambooze had appeared.

Instead, Fred Mpanga got summons requiring Nambooze to appear at Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court on November 17 to answer sedition charges.

According to the lawyers, it appears the Director of Public Prosecutions had not sanctioned the charges against Nambooze but because elements within the state didn’t want her to travel, her name was simply added onto an existing charge sheet for Siraje Lubwama, a journalist who appeared on the same talk-show with Nambooze on the now closed CBS radio.

Nambooze and Lubwama, her co-accused, are alleged to have described Uganda as a failed state in several radio talk-shows. But Police denied any role in stopping her from traveling to South Africa.

ENHAS EXPOSED

After Police denied any role, Nambooze’s husband Bakireke, Erias Lukwago, Kizito Sserumaga and Victor Mukasa went to South African Airways to establish why the airline had pulled a patient from its November 2 flight. At the same time, our sources indicate that one of Nambooze’s hosts in South Africa issued a statement to the media, accusing the airline of abating violation of the rights of a sick woman.

The airline got to know about the press statement in time and asked their Uganda office to explain. With pressure coming from their headquarters and from Uganda, the South African Airways Country Manager, Yogi Biriggwa, told Lukwago and company that they had been tricked by ENHAS to remove Nambooze from the flight.

To exonerate South Africa Airways of any wrongdoing, Biriggwa called Catherine Mpanga, the company’s manager at the airport, and put her on a phone loud speaker for the complainants to hear.
Embarrassed by the incident, South Africa Airways offered Nambooze $120 to book in a hotel of her choice where she would stay on Wednesday before her flight the following Thursday.

They also upgraded her ticket from Economy to Business class to compensate for the inconveniences caused. They even offered to pick her from wherever she would spend the extra day. The airline went as far as getting an airline official to clear her documents through immigration to ensure a smooth trip through Entebbe Airport. Lukwago confirmed the above story in a telephone interview on Friday.

Kayihura notified

Buganda sources have told us that Nambooze’s health and her travel nightmares were discussed during the kingdom’s cabinet meeting on Thursday.

Buganda’s State Minister for Research, David Mpanga, who coordinated the trip, reportedly briefed the meeting chaired by the Katikkiro, Eng. John Baptist Walusimbi. Mpanga, according to our sources, told his Mengo colleagues that to ensure Nambooze was not disturbed again, the Inspector General of Police, Maj. Gen. Kale Kayihura, had been notified about the urgency of her medical trip to South Africa.

Police sources have also told us that the Buganda cabinet was informed that Kayihura had no objection to Nambooze’s travel. Nambooze told The Observer shortly before flying to South Africa that she was angry with the way the state had treated her.

“Even without the backing of any law, they proclaimed that we must notify them before holding any public rally. They now also want us to notify them before traveling; this is very bad for the country,” Nambooze said.

Poison feared

In South Africa, doctors have subjected Nambooze to various tests. One of the doctors told The Observer on phone from Johannesburg on Friday that they had subjected her to sigmoidoscopy and gigmoidoscopy on her first day in hospital.

This was meant to establish the state of her digestive system. Nambooze has been suffering from intestinal problems for a while. Before flying to Johannesburg, her legs were slowly turning black, the reason doctors in South Africa subjected her to another test to rule out the possibility of poisoning.

Most of the doctors attending to her are Ugandan experts working in South Africa. One of them told The Observer that Nambooze’s condition can be treated but they will subject her to more medical tests. The doctor said they will examine her fully to establish whether her incarceration is part of what weakened her veins, something that causes some bleeding.

Nambooze was picked up by state operatives in the wee hours of July 18, 2008 and briefly detained at Jinja Road Police Station. She, together with Buganda Information Minister, Charles Peter Mayiga, and his deputy, Medard Lubega Ssegona, were later detained at various Police stations in Bundibugyo, Ibanda, Kagadi, Fort Portal and Kiruhura, before Ssegona and Nambooze were returned to Kampala and charged with sedition. Mayiga was released without a charge.

Besigye’s hand

Shortly after the riots, the Kabaka’s cabinet decided to fly Nambooze out of the country to seek medical treatment. The Buganda government decided that her ailment needed more advanced medical attention that Uganda couldn’t provide.

There was a proposal to fly her either to the US, UK or India. The idea of flying her out became even more urgent when FDC President, Dr. Kizza Besigye, a medical doctor, advised so after visiting Nambooze at Mukono, following an operation in September.

Besigye contacted medical colleagues in South Africa who expressed willingness to help.
All they required was to fly her to South Africa. The Mengo group, together with other well-wishers from the US, UK, South Africa and in Uganda, quickly raised money she needed for accommodation and upkeep.

“I am pleased with all the help I have received. The Kabaka can give directly or through his people. For me he has done both,” Nambooze told The Observer. She will be in South Africa for about a month and her lawyers are expected to inform court on November 17, that Nambooze is not ready to stand trial because of her health situation.

written by magala , November 08, 2009

Politics aside Betty Namboze is one of those few morally upright, selfless human beings of our times. In Buganda there are many people who are more able than Namboze but havent done as much for us. For that reason whatever touches her touches us she is a true VOICE to the voiceless

In the 1970s, Communist East Germany leaders filled prisons with critics. Even a political joke on radio was enough to land one in prison. They had a network of spies that cost the State so much money that by 1980, the State was broke.

Critics were subjected to mental torture too so as to wear them out and break their will. Litigation against critics in the GDR was meant to bunkrupt them. All that was going on in East Germany then is going on in Uganda now!Arbitrary arrests and detentions, intimidation, litigation, fabricated charges against people like Nambooze,Lukwago Sseggona, Mayiga, Kyanjo,Besigye and many others are all actions NOT signs, of a DICTATORSHIP.They have stayed for so long.

They are inflated and feel insulated by power and wealth! RESIST them, demand your rights; do not beg for what naturally belongs to you. It is only a matter of time and they will be history. And their history will be bad filthy indeed!

Dynamics of a problematic Failed State of Uganda.
written by Mugisha Abdul , November 08, 2009

When one reads through all this great and well researched information, i begin first of all to thank and wish THE OBSERVER, as a good paper of all we have in the country, which just print superficial news and leave out classified and harmful information as this one of Great Lady, Nambooze.

Away from that, i just want to remind Ugandans that when a Country is unpopular or failing just like you see Uganda, you should begin to somehow be very alert so that you witness the dynamics that come by, affecting even the very people who little thought that they were not to affected--ENHAS.

So what this company is doing is not handling cargo but TORTURING Ugandans. That is good because we will in the end after the removal of this government, sue ENHAS for not only compassation, but for other commited crimes which i can not disclose here, for ENHAS to change the tricks, which we are following keenly.

Also, just let the failing or falling Uganda, fall on now other innocent Countries like South Africa, who are now having it at their homes on TV that their airline is involved indirectly in the Torture and dehumanising of clients of another Country, Uganda and the end of it all is a huge shame and a justification of action of any kind, to a lethal regime whick poisons its own and even which uses coporates of relatives in power to extend a hand of torture.

i strongly beleive, the regime we have today will definately be absent tomorrow and i sympathise with all those poisoning and harming their fellow citizens as if there will be no tomorrow.Lets watch and see how the dynamics, drive away things to un anticipated destinations.(More is comming).

STIFF NECKED FOOLS + CRAZY BALD HEADS = FAILED STATE
written by Mayanja C , November 08, 2009

This government has lived beyond its thinking capacity. Are NRM security agents medical doctors to comment on the health of Namboze and thus deny the pilot from flying her?

What is the motive of stopping Namboze from flying to recieve treatment? What if she dies? Who will be responsible for her death? Much as she went to Southafrica for treatment but should anything happen, the government will still be responsible.

I thank the following;
1.The South african airways who realised their mistake and granted NAMBOZE a first class treatment.Thank you for that compensation. Please continue treating her as a FIRST CLASS CITIZEN.

2.Dr.Besigye, thank you for the care, much as i dont support FDC.

3.The Kabaka of Buganda for initiating the Trip and everything he did to ensure that Namboze recieves treatment in South africa.AYI SABASAJJA WANGALA.

4.I thank the Kabaka's high thinking intellectuals with boiling brains for their legal aid (Mpanga,Charles Peter Mayiga, Segona etc).

5. To all people of Uganda for your prayers to ensure that OUR hero moves safely to South africa.

The game is now at HALF-TIME (Namboze Vs Power and Blood Hungry lions).Namboze is leading so far by 4 goals to Nil.

To the readers and the general public, lets continue showing our solidarity to the brains of this country.

Shame upon the BLOOD HUNGRY LIONS OF NRM.Shame upon the BRUTALITY you use to suffocate our intellectuals.

What is ICC Prosecutor doing
written by Stephen Kakooza , November 09, 2009

If the ICC Prosecutor Moreno-Ocampo does not see reason to prosecute Museveni and his gang of mafias then he should leave Africa alone and go back to his farm in Algentina.

Uganda's only Airline was sold and the handling cargo department, which is the revenue source (ENHACE) now belongs to Kuteesa (Foreign Minister), by coincedence he also acquired a Ship after Uganda reported loss of its only ship on Indian Ocean, dont ask me why there was no investigation for the lost ship.

Closing Radio stations and harrassing people who are just informing Ugandas on the truth of our failed state will not keep the dictators in power for ever. Time will come to account for their deeds.

Ugandans lets join hands and use our brains to fight the common enemy. Daudi did it to Golias and South Africa is now free. One day Uganda will also be free

tricking Nambooze off a plane tatamounts to sentencing her to death. if her survival depended on those few days she was delayed how will the state deny responsibilty in case tragedy strikes and she days, but ofcourse there is no state in Uganda.

How i wish Ugandans know its time to forget politics and we join to save our mother country at this rate 10 years to come we wont have a country to fight for.

I thank mengo and other individuals who realise the value of our citizens.

...
written by kabayekka , November 09, 2009

One sympathises with Mrs Namboze for her suffering. Her fighing spirit will see her through.

It should be a good lesson to the DP supporters like the Haji Sebaggala, the twice Mayor of Kampala, that the party of DP is targeted since 1966 to be destroyed by all sorts of dodgy politicians.

The sudden loss of Mr Benendicto Kiwanuka was a good example. No government has ever taken the initiative to put up a commission of enquiry and a human rights report for the plain murder of Mr Kiwanuka. NRM government came about fighting UPC rigging of general elections.

When that job was finished NRM has tried to do all other jobs without any success. Hunting down such a simple innocent young lady up to her sick bed should not be one of NRM big jobs. It is a shame. Especially when many have died unnecessarily in government hospitals where NRM could have tried to do a better job. Why hang on to a job when there are better ways and other people who can do it better?

WE CAN NOW CONFIRM THE REPORTS
written by PAT Byamugisha , November 09, 2009

The reports that Nambooze was poiioned may have salt. The president will never end a speech without talking about Nambooze."These politicians like Nambooze...."

Even when addressing foreigners the president tells them of Lukyamuzi and Nambooze as if they know them. Dear President Nambooze has never instructed your Ministers including your VP to steal chogm funds.

She has never told your ministers to steal NSSF money (our hard earned savings), she has never told your army officers to grab land. She has not bared you from returning what the govt owes Buganda.

Why hate her to the extent of even trying to deny her her God given right? Long live the Kabaka, long live Nambooze. I am praying that you stay alive and witness the fall of M7 and his thieving Ministers not to talk of other govt officials.

There are big issues which are a pain to every Ugandan, the Hon President is concentrating on Nambooze. People do not have quality education, they have poor medical care, the minister who sits next to you is stealing, now power, very few new roads opened up (You keep promising).

When elections are about you throw poles for power or you grade roads as a sign that things are going to be worked on after the campains that is the end. Shame upon you. Wama Nambooze we are praying for you.

Even though a whole Reverend who ideally should be a man of God and with basic knowledge of the ten commandments. With the help of the accomplish M7 they have managed to keep u out of parliament and depriving us of good debators. But we are seeing all this and we are watching. Quick recovery

Mulidwa y wake up these sleepings dogs
written by Ruyonga Kenneth , November 09, 2009

My brother Ntanda Edward Mulindwa why wake these sleeping dogs? They are too drunk with power and wealth. They will never smell the coffee until there dusk comes to pass.

The only thing they are obsessed with right now is consolidating there grip on power. A trail that all dictatorial regimes blaze in there dying days.

The truth is history doesn’t repeat it’s self. Its narrow minded, self centered, reproduction mistakes like M7 and his relatives that repeat it. By refusing to learn from the past. There reasoning is between reptile and Neanderthal and that’s an insult to the reptiles.

To all the true patriotic Ugandans let’s not despair. For every dark night, there is a bright day after that.

This land is ours and long after these bastards are gone we shall still be here to pick up the pieces and see this pearl of Africa through to its destiny God intended it.

Failed state indeed!!!
written by Ronald , November 09, 2009

The president usually talks about the state extrajudicial killings during the past regimes. The fact is, these were open murders of innocent civillians by state security agents using guns acquired from tax payers' resources.

So much water has flown under the bridge since then. There is a slight difference now in those types of killings using the same tax payers' resources.

We have in our midst, murders instigated by the state, this time not openly, but quitely in form of torture in the safe houses, using lethal injections that take one's life slowly, so many untold stories of what goes on in state detention centers.

Its a big shame to our nation to have people governing us on trial and error methods. They will always gambling with the state resources they have, misusing them like they did on the Besigye court cases, dragging that same gambling to proffessional corporations like South Africa airlines, oh, what a shame to our society.

Unlike in developed countries where people grow sharper in their thinking as they become older, its quite the opposite in African leadership. As one lasts longer in power, the more useless and dumb he/she becomes.

Imagine an African president in power for so long shaking hands with over 6 serving American presidents who are democratically elected. Can any leader ever feel proud of that?

To me i would even be ashamed of making state visits to such countries, bcs deep inside their minds, i'll be rediculed. However much Mr. Museven rules this country, no progress will ever be registered in any sector of our economy, like health, education, agriculture, energy, etc bcs state inspired corruption in all forms has taken root like a cancer in one's flesh. Anyway, thats part of the theory of an enlightened dictator. God Bless Uganda

Is this the mature politics NRM preaches?
written by Ssebuwufu William Edward , November 09, 2009

Is Uganda still a worthy state? Do people have control over their lives? Is the government serving its people? Are Ugandans still proud of their country?

Why is the government fighting so hard to put every institution to waste and tarnishing them all? Is this the government that so much cautions people against hate politics?

Do ENHAS employees have training at all and do they know the implications of what they did? Has the so called government of the people come out to give any meaningful explanation to what was done to Betty Nambooze?

Do all the institutions in Uganda have to mistreat everybody they think is Museveni's rival? I only wish these ENHAS employees are targeted at individual level. It is only then that we shall get to unearth all the rot and also get people to pay for their wrongs.

Nambooze, You're In Our Prayers
written by Moses Okello , November 09, 2009

Teacher Betty Nambooze, Ugandans wish you a quick recovery. At onetime Hezekiah was a good king of Judah, contemporary with Isaiah the prophet.

King Hezekiah was shaken and challenged by two very bad times. He took these two terrible trials to God in prayer, and received help from God because he prayed. This story is recorded three times in the Bible... 2Kings chapters 19 and 20, 2Chronicles chapter 32, Isaiah chapters 37 and 38.

Nambooze, and our prayers will be answered in the next elections. People, should know that when His Majesty, maintains his silence, in most cases it means approval.

We are used to "going through channels" when we want something done. Imagine your neighbour was making too much noise and you couldn't reason with him. Would you telephone the Prime Minister of Australia to get something done about it?

Even if you were a personal friend, you couldn’t. Just wait for your turn and exercise your power.
People, should also demand a public apology from the South African Airline and a sack for its Entebbe-based manager Catherine Mpanga.

It this condition is not met, then the public will know that, their staffs are security agents. Life is not compromise. Ugandan lawyers abroad should file a suit against this airline for employing staff who can compromise people’s lives.

By employing people like Catherine Mpanga, South African Airlines risks its financial interests.

But then again if the company belongs to Kutesa who is M7's inlaw it should not be shocking. This will come to an end sooner rather than later!!

Nabooze, lets hope you will not end up like those of Brig. Mayombo, Wapa and many others who have died of stomach complications. But should they succeed in getting you out off political scene, your spirit will give us strength to fight them politicaly or militarily.

Ugandans, we have talked, seen, heard, it is enough. Talking will not help us any more. Lets act now or never. Our children, relatives, parents, friends etc, etc are going one by one on our watch. We need to save our country. We should not see another Nambooze going to SA for treatmet.

Get up stand up! Stand up for your rights! We either fight them or join them in killing our own people. Stand up now. We need no charm election. Do we need another Julius Nyerere? No, we can do it ourselves. "Yes we are able"!

Why cant M7, see what the whole world sees, that he has over stayed, people need change. Yet when he came to power he identified Africas problem as leaders who overstay, is power a mean or an end?

DR. ARONZO -Newspapers are not text books, the fact is Nambooze is in SA and sick
written by Marcy Luwedde , November 10, 2009

A News paper is supposed to give you a general picture, spelling mistakes may occur once in a while and are excusable world wide so I gather observer may have wanted to write G/moidscopy which is a known term.

So poor Dr Aronzo shape up, lets look at the Woman's condition and not simple spelling mistakes in the story which may have been introduced by the computer accidently. After all the story was written by journalists not Medical Doctors and by the way even your own little contribution has serious gramatic mistakes

and if I may ask are you trying to mislead anyone?I instead want to praise the observer team for atleast giving us a general picture about the health of our "teacher". We are ready to contribute towards her medical bills after all we know the Kabaka and Besigye are also operating on a very limited bugdet.

THE DICTATORSHIP IS RUNNING AMOK
written by Kiwanuka Robert , November 11, 2009

The criminal murderous gangster regime in Uganda deserves to be immediately taken to the Hague's ICC. The dictatorship has thrown all caution of rationality and civility to the winds. Their time is up though. Ugandans are just fed up! No matter how many people they will poison and shoot-to-kill or maim or whatever, this criminal and murderous dictaorship and its cabal of court jesters and cheersleaders will have their ***es kicked and go back to where they naturally belong. Have a quick recovery Madam Teacher Betty Nambooze!
Thanks Dr. Besigye for your kind and timely intervention!
Thanks Your Majesty for your most generous and considerate care for our heroine Betty Nambooze and all those who are fighting for the Kingdom of Buganda!
