The World Read Aloud Day has been celebrated for the first time in Uganda. This was at Makerere Primary School on March 3 where pupils told stories and did paintings.
The World Read Aloud Day is a global celebration of the invaluable practice of reading aloud and reciting. The Primary Four class teacher, Ms. Shana Aida Kibone said her class has got exposure and is hopeful that they learnt a lot out of this day.
“We have offered them a permanent place to celebrate the day every year because they brought in new experiences to the kids and encouragement,” said Kibone.
The attendance was overwhelming. The event was facilitated by FreeBalance, a company that provides software to government aiming at bringing literacy to the world’s most vulnerable communities.
Tiberius Forrester, FreeBalance’s Production Consultant told Observer School that they decided to launch the first Annual World Read Aloud Day (WRAD) in Uganda to raising the awareness of the importance of literacy, foster community life and promoting the transformative power of storytelling.
Tiberius Forrester said they hope by raising the voices to express the written word, pupils come together to create meaning, enhanced understanding and shared experiences of words and stories.
“That is the only way we can help to enlist Ugandans to become involved in the movement for global literacy,” Tiberius said.
He said they are ensuring that children everywhere in the world have basic academic needs as a way of giving back to the communities.
