Akram Mugerwa, 12, the best overall pupil at Kiddawalime Preparatory School with 5 aggregates, was all smiles on January 29 when he received a dummy cheque worth Shs 1 million from Stanbic Bank’s Managing Director, Philip Odera.
The little boy could not hide his pride before the cameras at Stanbic Bank’s city branch at Cham Towers as he received the ‘motivational gift.’
A third born of five, Akram has topped his class since he joined Kiddawalime Preparatory on Hoima Road in Kampala. “He was chosen a class monitor in P.6; and, besides, he is a role model at school, very well disciplined and smart…” said Mathias Kibuuka, the head teacher.
Akram’s performance is even more outstanding gauged against the quality of his school based in Namungoona, which is a densely populated Kampala suburb with a more rural than urban setting as described by the bank’s Corporate Communications Manager, Daniel Nsibambi.
“When we heard about his ambition of becoming an accountant and later working with Stanbic Bank last Thursday, we went to his school, met his head teacher who linked us to his parents and we decided to get him on board at an early age,” said Nsibambi.
Akram Mugerwa later opened up a Young Club and Bonus Investment Account number 902083 for his Shs 1 million, which his father, Hajj Sentongo Mohammed, said would be used partly for his school fees.
However, the fund is primarily for his Young Club Account which would mature after six years, in time to help him join university if he maintains his good performance.
“According to his past progressive performance in primary, he automatically won’t fail university, and as Stanbic Bank, we have promised him a job at our institution. The bank will always organise regular orientation visits at the institution for little Mugerwa during holidays to get him acquainted with operations and gradually be initiated into the bank’s system,” said Philip Odera. At the main branch in Kampala, Akram visited the Managing Director’s office where he even sat in his chair as a way to motivate him.
