Things are not looking good in the Conservative Party (CP). The Chairman, John Ken Lukyamuzi, popularly known as Ken The Man, having been hounded out of Parliament by former Inspector General of Government, Faith Mwondha, now wants to reclaim his Lubaga South Parliamentary seat.

Unfortunately for Ken, his daughter Suzan Nampijja, whom he helped win the seat, has found it too rewarding and sweet to simply relinquish. Lukyamuzi left Parliament in 2005 and was blocked from contesting any elective office in 2006 for failing to declare his wealth as dictated by the Leadership Act 2002. He petitioned against the move, and the matter is now before the Supreme Court.

While campaigning for Nampijja in 2006, Lukyamuzi told rallies that he had found in his 31-year-old daughter a capable substitute. Since he likes calling himself “The man”, Lukyamuzi told voters that his daughter was “Susan The Woman.” He also called her ‘Dangerous Substitute’. Opposition sources have told us that the 57-year-old Lukyamuzi is angry that his daughter, whom he helped get elected, wants to get re-elected in 2011, instead of returning the seat to her father who bestowed it on her.

Angry Lukyamuzi has even stopped taking Nampijja to the Inter Party Co-operation (IPC) talks, something he has religiously done for two years now. Close family members tell us that after building her career, “The Woman” wants to keep the seat the same way Lukyamuzi did when he effortlessly took it in 1996 from Damiano Lubega, after DP decided to boycott elections. We are told both the father and daughter might pick nomination forms for Lubaga South come 2011.

Minister Kajara’s lacklustre nightlife

State Minister for Investment, Aston Kajara, got lost and ended up in Theatre La Bonita where Stecia Mayanja was premiering her movie last Friday, instead of Spectrum Restaurant where he was supposed to be the chief guest at a Women Entrepreneurs’ dinner.

It was a phone call from the organisers that saved him. His misery continued when the show ended and he walked around the theatre looking for his driver.

“I have not been here before and I did not know that such a place exists in Kampala,” he said as he approached a kiosk for airtime.

Apparently his phone had no credit that is the reason he could not locate his driver. After getting airtime, he was seen moving towards Statistics House.

Is Beti Kamya’s Federal Alliance on its deathbed?

Beti Kamya used to be one of the most noticeable and influential legislators in the House. But ever since she acrimoniously parted ways with FDC and founded the Uganda Federal Alliance (UFA), her influence in Parliament has diminished.

But this is a story for another day. For now we have got it on good authority that UFA, whose identity gravitates between a political party and a civil society organisation, could be on its last wheels.

Apparently Kamya has failed to sell the concept of federo to all parts of the country, and some of the group’s members are consequently getting disillusioned. One of the chief mobilisers of UFA, Muhammad Bahati, was overheard telling friends last week that he was getting tired of the whole thing. Kamya had better rethink her options.

Mutuluza, Amelia set for battle of Titans

In what is shaping out to be an interesting duel, Mawokota South MP, Peter Mutuluza, has reportedly turned down calls by the Presidential Principal Private Secretary, Amelia Kyambadde’s camp to step down.

Kyambadde last week declared her intention to stand for the Mawokota South seat. Because of her influence and ability to raise financial resources, some pundits believe she will easily unseat Mutuluza.

Yet Mutuluza enjoys enough support to worry Amelia. We have been told by very reliable sources that Mutuluza has been approached with cash offers and promises to be given a juicy political appointment, but he has turned both offers down.

To make matters worse, last week Mutuluza voted against the Land Bill which was being promoted vehemently by the NRM. It appears that battle lines have been drawn.

Beginning next week, The Observer shall run a 2011 Election Platform Column on this page. Anybody interested in standing for a given parliamentary seat should send their details and photo to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Hon. Peter Mutuluza is a very good example of other the ruling party MPs and they should look at him and the other two as exemplary. Let your conscience come first and not money.
