The Observer newspaper has won an award from the Population Secretariat and United Nations Population Fund for its coverage of population issues.

The Observer emerged the best newspaper in covering population and development issues in 2009. The award was received by Pius Muteekani Katunzi, the newspaper’s Business Development Director, during the launch of the State of Uganda and World Population reports at Sheraton Kampala Hotel on Thursday.

Commenting on the award, Charles Zirarema, the acting director at the Population Secretariat, applauded The Observer for standing out as the only newspaper that carried a related editorial on World Population Day.

There were four other winners. New Vision’s Lydia Namubiru and Irene Nabusoba were both awarded Best Print Journalist of the year. The Best TV Journalist of the year went to Leah Bwanika of Nation TV, while Best Radio Journalist award went to David Rupiny and Charles Odongtho, both of Uganda Radio Network.

Handing out the awards, the guest of honour, Minister for Finance, Planning and Economic Development, Syda Bbumba, commended the media for playing an important role in social development.
