Lydia Draru, 28, told Police that she met Major General James five years ago and instantly fell in love with him. Army sources close to Kazini, however, told The Observer that the two had known each other for more than 15 years, and have a teenage son together.
In fact, these sources told us that the two had just made up, having gone separate ways in the early 2000s. Our sources also disputed the age of Draru. She claims to be 28 years of age but the Army sources say she is at least 40 years old.
Early this year, Kazini is reported to have customarily married Draru during a function in Arua where he reportedly gave her father six cows. She became his second wife after Phoebe Kazini, with whom he has five children.
According to her Namuwongo neighbours, Draru was previously a prostitute but she had abandoned the trade after landing General Kazini. Quite tall, light skinned and with a build of an athlete, neighbours say Draru grew up in Wabigalo, in a place nicknamed Toninyirira.
She’s said to be a reserved person who rarely spoke to her neighbours. But she enjoyed the company of boda boda cyclists in part because she regularly used their services. Draru was outgoing and liked hanging out in happening places, especially bars and nightclubs.
Previously she rented a flat, about 100 metres away from her current residence. Curiously, she is known by several different names; Judith Atim, Asiimwe, etc. Neighbours claim that she had dated a number of prominent men, including an RDC of one of the divisions in Kampala. Yet after re-uniting with Kazini, she appeared to have been re-born.
“She has been telling us that she is no longer our size because she is moving out with Kazini,” commented a boda boda cyclist who knew her well.
Kazini too loved her, despite their ups and downs. He decided to move her from the flat to a nearby two-bedroom house and opened for her a boutique not far away. He has been a regular at her place and neighbours had gotten used to his visits, which came with some inconvenience.
They say Kazini usually came with four or more bodyguards who would then comb the area and keep watch over the neighbourhood as their boss got cosy with his lover. At times the guards would virtually close off a section of the road, neighbours said.
