Lydia Draru, 28, told Police that she met Major General James five years ago and instantly fell in love with him. Army sources close to Kazini, however, told The Observer that the two had known each other for more than 15 years, and have a teenage son together.

In fact, these sources told us that the two had just made up, having gone separate ways in the early 2000s. Our sources also disputed the age of Draru. She claims to be 28 years of age but the Army sources say she is at least 40 years old.

Early this year, Kazini is reported to have customarily married Draru during a function in Arua where he reportedly gave her father six cows. She became his second wife after Phoebe Kazini, with whom he has five children.

According to her Namuwongo neighbours, Draru was previously a prostitute but she had abandoned the trade after landing General Kazini. Quite tall, light skinned and with a build of an athlete, neighbours say Draru grew up in Wabigalo, in a place nicknamed Toninyirira.

She’s said to be a reserved person who rarely spoke to her neighbours. But she enjoyed the company of boda boda cyclists in part because she regularly used their services. Draru was outgoing and liked hanging out in happening places, especially bars and nightclubs.

Previously she rented a flat, about 100 metres away from her current residence. Curiously, she is known by several different names; Judith Atim, Asiimwe, etc. Neighbours claim that she had dated a number of prominent men, including an RDC of one of the divisions in Kampala. Yet after re-uniting with Kazini, she appeared to have been re-born.

“She has been telling us that she is no longer our size because she is moving out with Kazini,” commented a boda boda cyclist who knew her well.

Kazini too loved her, despite their ups and downs. He decided to move her from the flat to a nearby two-bedroom house and opened for her a boutique not far away.  He has been a regular at her place and neighbours had gotten used to his visits, which came with some inconvenience.

They say Kazini usually came with four or more bodyguards who would then comb the area and keep watch over the neighbourhood as their boss got cosy with his lover. At times the guards would virtually close off a section of the road, neighbours said.

Could see that

This lady didn't look 28 to me either. I knew this lady some years ago & she was much older than me when i was still in my teens.

So unless she was growing younger then the story of the age did not sound right. But at the end of the day i think women will always be the down fall of men, because when i saw the way people wrote & were shocked that Kazini had survived many wars but fallen to a woman, i would like to remind them of many stories in the bible were greater men (David, Samson etc) have had fatefully occurences with women.

All i can say is let the man finally rest in peace because its goes on to show that he was not happy in this life & a lesson to all of us that we need to mend our ways before we get into similar fate!!

The unfortunate relationship

It is a pity that a top general and former army commander should die in such circumstances. Please men, stop encouraging prostitution. Prostitutes are not kind after so many men have abused them. Discourage prostitution.

Kazini wives - the Nile connection.
written by Christopher Muwanga , November 12, 2009

It is not accurate say the other official woman of Kazini as ONLY Phoebe. The Church-wedded wife of Kazini (at St. James' Cathedral, Ruharo, Mbarara) is Ms Maria Katushabe Kazini, former staff officer at the Post Office.

They unfortunately never had a child together and seemingly separated although she recently was in the news for placing an injunction on the introduction of by another woman of Kazini.

After the Post & Telecom job, Maria went into private business selling ffene, and other fruits in France, etc. She then went into "African clothing and batiques" trade at Buganda road.
She is now domiciled in Canada.

Dralu, on the other hand, is not the only Lugbara woman in Kazini's life (his first official wife was a Lugbara) - something not surprising since, after his boss Amin's overthrow, Kazin lived in the West Nile region and even fought against the successive post Amin governments under at least 3 pro-Amin rebel groups in West Nile, South Sudan and Eastern Congo. He was, in other words, a "lugbaro-phile" in blood and in actions.

Guards

In fact i also agree with you people , this lady is older than she said if i see from the look on her face, what she did was tragic i could not believe when i heard of the incident.

No any lover in this world deserves what Draru did to Kazini.
written by kukunda , November 12, 2009

Look at you Draru, you will live to regret your evil actions. The man picked you on the streets, gave you a home, business and all the comfort (emotionally, socially and economically) but at the end of the day, you used his own money to pay him back with death!!

True, once a prostitute will always behave like a prostitute.Ok, you killed him to enjoy his riches you acquired from him but i doubt whether you will live the life as you expected.

Lets wait and see as you shine on top of him.I wish, that head of his which you shutterd, could haunt you each and every second you live until your last breath.

Editor,
General Kazini knew the secret in Lugbara women. I remember he had another Lugbara woman called Flo, with whom he had a couple of kids. She lived in Nalukolongo area. This was 1996-2001. In 2007, I learned that the two had parted ways.
The General opened for her a pub business in Entebbe.

I hope the press is not mixing up Flo with the killer woman with multiple fake names.

GEN JAMES KAZINI,he will be remembered as HERO in the field of command which he exhibited in wars fought by Ugandan forces.

He loved the poor people and the rich on a levelled ground, his hospitality to the civil society. He should be recorded in the book of ugandan HEROS basing on his extraordinary achievements.

LET GOD BLESS GEN KAZINI`S SPIRIT AND FORGIVE HIM ON HIS DEMERITS AS ALL OF US WE ARE VULNEARABLE.REST IN PEACE AS WE WAIT TO JOIN YOU KAZINI ON A DAY WE DON`T KNOW EXCEPT THE LORD.

It is a lesson to humanity as always.
written by Nabwire Jackie , November 12, 2009

What happened was indeed very unfortunate to the general. But what could we expect from a life that he lived.

I mean partying to morning with I don't know what friends without the knowledge and protection of his family . This is no way any one deserves to die. I bet any one will ever really know what really took place that day.

Unfortunately the only person who would have told us is silent. I just hope he remained conscious long enough at his time of death to prepare his way with his GOD and he can have at last a lasting peace in heaven that outrightly lacked here on earth despite his try to search for it.

May God rest his soul in enternal peace and strengthen his family emotionally to stand strong in all of this. And may we learn that although we may seem full of life we can die any moment and take heed. We all must know that at the end of the day all have faults in our own small ways.

A bit of confusion here!
written by Joseph , November 12, 2009

In the first line of paragraph 4 above we read that " She’s said to be a reserved person who rarely spoke to her neighbours" In the last sentence of the same paragraph we read " Draru was outgoing and liked hanging out in happening places, especially bars and nightclubs". These two statements are contradictory and indicate that there is no story here!

Am Confused.

We should all pray and jutice comes out.where are the men the police is hunting who might have helped in this Murder?

APPETITE KILLS
written by eddy woods , November 12, 2009

What kills a man begins as an appetite, for Kazini it has been beer and women, for Museveni it is the insatiable appetite for power no matter how long he rules.

Chocking on pillage, good riddance of a chakamchaka reject
written by omwouganda , November 12, 2009

Let the thugs eat to their fill. How about the mayhem they wrought on the entire great lakes region ? The plunder of congo resoures; the countless people they killed from northern uganda through rwanda to the congo; the countless ghost soldiers they deployed to fleece the national coffers; and the under age kids they deployed to die for them!. These people, with less than adequate education and upbringing, were drunk on chakamchaka indoctrinaire cultism. Mungu iko. Don't f*ck with those women. She probabaly sensed the power had treated him like a dog: thrown to jail, and put under heavy litigation he could never win, so she got rid of his disgraced self; and to save him from his public humilation and misery. What did you expect: his own cult - NRM - turned against him.

Ms Draru will not live through her trial.
written by Nsubuga , November 12, 2009

Having read and watched a you tube video courtesy of NTV about the General's death I'm certain Ms Draru is orchestrating a cover up, according to the NTV video footage the General was either leaving the house or opening the door, it is therefore likely that who ever hit him was at the door, and blood gushed through the door way. Why would Ms Draru hit the General when he was living?

Upon confessing to this murder a professional police force was supposed to bring back the suspect to the crime scene to walk them step by step what had happened earlier to collaborate her statement.

Having confessed to this crime she has now outlived her usefulness, lest she begins to back track. This is my bottom dollar bet Ms Draru will not live through her trial !!!

the down fall of a man are women so couples plz.............this is an eye opener.

dont agree
written by smith , November 13, 2009

i really dont think that woman committed the murder alone. i strongly believe there are other people inside the house.

people who planned the murder took advantage of our poor technology. i'm if were in europe i would shocked to find out that she was not acting alone. i'm sure we would find forensic evidence in that house

Really tragic
written by Agaba , November 13, 2009

Where we were young boys in Kabale there was a preacher telling us the youth, that the breasts of a woman when you meet her they are warm but it is just a time bomb waiting to explode. Am informing men like me who are still breathing.

These girls of the night are complicated however much they may pretend to reform. For example ask one in confidentiality they mention of having six men a day without wink of an eye. So brothers can you handle that one??.

They have insatiable appetite. Every other day you hear or read they have chlorofomed men, robbed their monies or even have killed. So men let us be awake. May God bless his soul in peace.

Our Hero
written by Kansaze, Stockholm , November 13, 2009

Draru! you will never have peace until the end of your life. How do you feel if you think about your lover the late General! Think about how you've been moving with him!

After all that he did for u, i don't think you still have even a second to appreciate or to thank him. Oh my God you killed your heart also. Draru! why did you do this to your husband(partner)?

Kazini Ordered cold blooded killing of detainees
written by Vahid , November 13, 2009

In December 1990 detainees without trial in Makindye went on a sit-down strike, refusing to re-enter their cells until assurance of their trial or release was given.

As darkness fell the detainees stood their ground until Kazini and his troops were called in from Lubiri barracks.

On arrival Kazini told the detainees either they enter the cells or taste the bullet. The detainees stood their ground and few minutes later we, who were held in the go-downs, heard sporadic gunfire. There were screams and panic ... Kazini had ordered his troops to fire direct on detainees.

Several detainees died and the incident was never reported anywhere. Few weeks later a review of cases was ordered and some of us benefitted from it.

But that was not the end of the ordeal ... few weeks after our release Kazini was appointed Commandant of Military Police, effectively putting him to head Makindye.

As Kazini moved in conditions turned from worse to worst. Nearly half of the friends whom I left in the go-downs died as Kazini moved in to curb what he termed "Detainee indiscipline".

I'm sure where he has moved to he will come face to face with some of this victims.

To some of us who went through Kazini's nightmare (for my case, first in Lubiri then later Makindye), there is no love lost with this tyrant.

Its a real tragedy
written by Dennis , November 13, 2009

Uganda as a nation has lost a patriotic man.Kiling some one is not the best thing to do, but how about when you are doing it in self-defence? You got no option rather than to kill so let the forensic science prove us right then judgement can be made but death is the final destination for every living thing in the world so let us all do not be one sided of the deceased.R.I.P Kazini.

General Kazini
written by Kakuba , November 13, 2009

Its true that the downfall of man is a woman,.....once a prostitute one will always be that;......once a woman starts having extra marital affairs e.g. bringing men to your house, will always do that.
Men, this is an eye opener to all of us. Such women should never be trusted for God*s sake!!
Its possibe that this lovebird could have been assisted in this murder but it all goes back to what am saying.
Watchout men, next may be you and me!!
May his soul rest in eternal peace. Our God should judge him kindly.
MR.KAKUBA.
