FDC president Dr Kizza Besigye has cautioned journalists to beware of police brutality following the death of Assistant Inspector of Police John Michael Ariong on March 21 during skirmishes between civilians and the police in the city.
Addressing the press last Friday, Besigye urged journalists to be careful and to wear protective gear while covering demonstrations and events involving opposition politicians because, according to the information he had received, the police are now targeting journalists.
The skirmishes and Ariong’s unfortunate passing sparked off anger among police officers, with some threatening to avenge their colleague’s death.
And, while the Inspector General of Police, Lt Gen Kale Kayihura, advised police officers to remain calm and avoid seeking revenge, his deputy, Martin Okoth Ochola, warned that the red flag had been raised.
“We can’t keep holding back our hands when lawless people are killing us. It’s time to act within the law to eradicate lawlessness in the country,” he told The Observer, repeating sentiments he had expressed during Ariong’s requiem service at Christ the King Church in Kampala last Friday.
